The concept of waxed fabric was born in the early 15th century, when Scottish sailors in the North Sea fleets began using fish oils and animal fats. This made the fabrics more efficient, stronger and waterproof. When these sails eventually broke down over time, sailors used them as cloaks to protect themselves and keep dry.<\/p>\n
