Her first job

At the age of 13 she began working in a haberdashery, combining it with her studies. From there she moved to a shirt shop, to later study at an academy, where she learned the craft of cutting and sewing.

His love for the mountains begins

The first discipline that Pedro discovered, by pure chance, was climbing. He later became a climbing teacher after taking a course at the Spanish Federation, which led him to join the Spanish Alpine Club.

First sleeping bag

In 1954, he made his first sleeping bag, mainly to protect himself from the low temperatures to which he was exposed in the mountains. These down-filled sleeping bags, to which he incorporated new nylon fabrics that he discovered during his expeditions to the Alps, brought him great success among his expedition companions. From then on, he began to receive his first orders and also began to develop other garments to combat the cold.

He registers the brand and the legend begins

Due to the fantastic initial reception of the bags, Pedro designs new silhouettes and sees how the demand for his creations increases. In 1959, he decided to register his own mountain clothing company.
The Caucasus model, a down jacket developed for the high mountains, contributes decisively to his fame and recognition in the Spanish mountaineering world.

Present in the most important expeditions

The development of technical garments for cold weather such as anoraks, unknown until then in Spain, together with the notoriety achieved by the first triumphs of national mountaineering, place the company at the top of technical clothing in Europe.

El Igloo opens its doors

Due to the great demand for his products, Pedro Gómez decides to take over a small shop in Marqués de Lema Street, in Cuatro Caminos. In a short time he had to expand his store by acquiring the adjacent premises and turning it into a unique three-storey space: Deportes El Igloo.

Personalized attention by mountain sports specialists

Pedro Gómez pens are consolidated as a reference in the ski slopes throughout the national territory and even beyond our borders. Likewise, El Igloo has become the multi-brand store of reference for lovers of alpine sports. Many well-known faces from the world of culture and the jet set are advised in their purchases by Pedro and his team.

The down jacket boom: from the mountain to the city

The recognizable silhouette of Canadian models, vests and shorts makes them youthful and iconic garments, transcending the sports barrier to become a benchmark of urban fashion. Customized down jackets take to the streets and become highly coveted pieces.

Retreat to the Himalayas

Nearing his 70th birthday, personal circumstances forced him to close the store and the brand in the midst of its growth and expansion. He took the opportunity to resume his great passion for the mountains and trekking in the Himalayas, regularly visiting the NGO Maiti Nepal, to which he has always been closely linked and that today continues to help altruistically.

Back to the top of the mountain

In September 2019 the firm returns to revive with strength. Respecting its essence and with Pedro himself within the team, the manufacturing processes that yesterday took us to the top are recovered and that today allow us to create new garments with more sustainable and advanced materials, but with the same quality as always.
